Lionel Messi, one of the most decorated football players of all time and the current Ballon d’OR holder is known to pop up with audacious tricks from time to time. His goal scoring exploits and assists leave a lot to be desired across the football fraternity.

Poised to score his 300th career league goal from the penalty spot, he instead produced a sneaky assist for his team’s fourth goal of the game by passing the ball in the path of the onrushing Luis Suarez.

The penalty was awarded after the Barcelona front man was felled in the box as the game neared its conclusion, however, despite stepping up to take the spot kick, he was not in a hurry to score his record setting career league goal as Barcelona thrashed Celta Vigo 6-1 at Camp Nou. Rather than sending the ball to the back of the net as most would have expected, he instead tapped the ball to his right, into the path of the onrushing Luis Suarez who buried the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to complete his hat trick.

The video of the audacious trick went viral following the game with most football fans debating on whether the trick was in line with the rules governing how a penalty kick should be taken. Apparently, it came as a surprise to most football fans that the audacious routine was perfectly within the rules and that it had been performed by past players in the game.

Messi is known for pulling some sneaky tricks to compliment his amazing goal scoring record. However, his decision to pass the opportunity to reach a new milestone exhibited another side to his game. Messi has racked up a myriad of assists during his career, but there is no doubt that his sneaky pass for Luis Suarez’s third goal against Celta Vigo is a top contender of his most ridiculous assists in a Barcelona shirt.
