The Family should always come first. We see portrayals of happy families every day in our television shows, movies, and all other forms of media. I think we all have an image or idea that comes to mind when with think of the ideal, happy family unit. Do you ever ask yourself whether or not your family fits that description?


If it doesn’t, don’t worry. There are lots of ways to improve the way in which your family functions together and tips to keep your family safe, happy, and healthy. It’s important to keep your family together, and your home as free from stress as possible.

Here are 5 things you can try to help you keep your family safe and happy.

1. Communicate

Communication is key in any relationship, not matter who it’s with. In many families, communication within the group is often one-sided, with the parents giving all the information and the children not reciprocating. In other instances, everyone tells everything the mother figure in the family to pass the message and neglects the other members. In a healthy family, it’s important to keep more open, relaxed forms of communication between all members of the unit. Lowering your voice can reduce stress and allow for better communication. Open, natural communication also encourages children to be safer and ensures that parents know where their children are at all times, without becoming overbearing.

2. Spend Time Together

You’d think spending time together would be an obvious and unavoidable part of being part of a family unit, but a large portion of families today don’t spend enough time together. Doing activities together is one way to promote this, and encourages bonding between children and their parents, as well as between spouses. Even casual evenings spending time together at home is a great way to promote the growth of a happy family.

3. Put Your Marriage First

In many families, children come first. However, this often makes for an unstable foundation for the family unit between the spouses. It’s important for parents to set a healthy example of real love for the children to see from a young age. Also, when spouses are neglected in favor of children, they tend to become substitute providers of love, creating unhealthy family dynamics. Whether it’s your wife or your husband, make sure to take time out for each other.

4. Be Prepared, Together

Safety in the home doesn’t just apply to locking the door and checking the smoke detectors once a month. It also means to go over emergency plans together as a family. This can include exit strategies, what to do in any weather emergency, what to do in a break-in situation or anything else you’d like to go over. Preparedness as a family unit can reduce stress and promote bonding.

5. Make and Keep Family Friends

Keeping an open social circle is that includes your family is a great way to promote a healthy family. This means keeping family friends that are close with all members of the family. This is a great way to keep everyone engaged with each other while promoting healthy social behaviors.
