So you’ve found yourself at a party where you need to dance. As a guy, sometimes its tough to find those right moves. Here a very quick three-step guide to dancing at a party, without looking too funny.

The first step is making sure you are confident in yourself! Approach that dance floor and own it, but make sure you are relaxed and comfortable. No one wants to dance with a robot, unless you’re doing “The Robot”. It’s is very important to make sure that your body is not stiff. The best way to do this is to dance as if no one was there and it is just you and the music. Listen to the beat, and let your body follow the natural rhythm of the song.

Choose songs that you truly enjoy. At parties there is usually a variety of music playing. You need to have the right melody to go up and dazzle on the dance floor, and the best approach to doing that is making sure you enjoy what is being played. Once you hear it, get up there and knock em’ dead! Once you are feeling that groove, there a couple of physical movements you can make such as nod your head to the beat and sway your arms. Take a little walk, bounce or shuffle around the dance floor to get familiarized with area and what you’re working with.

If you set your sights on a lady to dance with, then feel free to take the opportunity to get closer to her. The key thing is not get too close! No one wants someone invading their personal space and pressing their body against you without you asking. It is important to make eye contact, smile, and even throw in a compliment on what a great dancer she is. You’ll soon have a partner on that floor in no time. And then all of a sudden you hear the slow dance music. If you already have your lady friend dancing next to you, you can make that easy transition. If it is clear that she is waiting for you to make the move, then place one hand on her hip and lift her other hand up to shoulder height. From there, sway to the music. This is the opportunity to get to know your partner. Ask her name, how she is enjoying the party. Keep your conversation simple, yet show that you are interested in how she is doing.

From there, it is likely the music can return to a faster pace. If you’re truly enjoying yourself, continue to keep dancing. If you would like a break to check out the rest of the party, this is also completely acceptable. Go ahead and try some hor’s d’ouevres, grab a beer and get social with the other party guests. After all, you’re here to have a good time, to make friends and let loose from your everyday routine.
